Donogh - Dublin Technical Intern
Summer 2004
Can you tell us a little bit about you?
I'm from Cork and studied Computer Science at UCC. I graduated this year (2004). I'm currently working as a Software Engineer in the IBM Dublin Software Lab.
Why did you apply for the Extreme Blue internship?
It has a great reputation and was personally recommended to me by a number of people. When I looked into it, I felt compelled to apply. It's no ordinary internship!
How do you think your background and experience prepared you for the internship?
Since the projects are derived from real business needs, and expectations are high, you really do have to develop something that works. So experience with team-based projects definitely helps. As well as a good understanding of object oriented programming and related concepts.
What have you learned from your Extreme Blue experience?
One of the great aspects of Extreme Blue is the presentation experience. Every week we had to present our progress and, at the end of the program we presented our project to a much larger audiences at two separate expos.
Is there anything about the Extreme Blue program that surprised you?
I was most surprised by the level of responsibility we were given. We had complete control over the direction of the project and, with guidance, achieved a lot more than anyone expected in 12 weeks!
Would you recommend the program to other students and why?
I know it sounds cliche, but be yourself in the interview. Everyone's very nice and no one's trying to catch you out. It'd be helpful to revise your C++/Java and practice some aptitude tests too.
If and when you get into the program, the main thing is to keep an open mind. Oh and a little optimism never goes astray!
