Kevin - Almaden Research Center, 2002

After learning about the IBM Extreme Blue™ program from his school advisors, Kevin--a Purdue University student majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics--decided to spend his summer at the Almaden Research Center in California, where he quickly became impressed with the fast-paced environment and cutting-edge projects.

"I can't stress enough how different and unique the Extreme Blue program is compared to other internship experiences I've had. I was particularly impressed with my project and how it will actually be taken forward and used," Kevin says. "I also really liked the whole environment: 25 students, four per team; it was a great opportunity to work with the brightest minds."

He also feels the lab environment was nearly perfect and definitely fostered superior team working capability. "Our team fit together nicely and communicated well. And the project support we received enabled us to be extremely productive." Kevin says he also enjoyed the occasional group outings and was able to do some things that he never experienced before, such as hiking at Yosemite National Park, and seeing both the Atlantic and Pacific ocean.

One of the perks that come with a good internship are networking opportunities. Kevin, who plans to graduate in May, says the Extreme Blue Expo offered a rare opportunity to see many different group and hiring managers in one place. "There were plenty of networking opportunities including lab tours, the Extreme Blue Expo, and talks from Sam Palmisano, and other senior executives." As for the future, Kevin is currently speaking with some people at IBM about permanent positions.

Kevin adds that he's gained a whole new appreciation for the amount of ongoing innovation at IBM. "I was really surprised with how IBM has its hands in so many different areas. I didn't have an appreciation for the breadth of IBM's interests before my internship. I can honestly say, this was clearly the best internship I've ever had. I really miss everyone and being a part of that team. I'd strongly urge anyone that's considering an internship to join the Extreme Blue program."
